A woman in a black headscarf and mourning collar poses forlornly for a dark, almost haunting, portrait. The combination of the mourning attire, the age of the woman, the overall tone, and presumed mid-1800s dating, suggests this to be a portrait of a woman in mourning over a civil war soldier husband's death. This would also give reason to ornately frame the image. With antique photos one can only use their imagination to weave a narrative surrounding the image captured. And this scenario seems likely but the truth rests with this individual and we will never truly know.

Image features:

Portrait of a woman in black headscarf and mourning band around her neck. Underneath she is wearing a white button-up pinstripe corset dress with a decorative brooch. The photo is "black & white" but has a goldish tone, the woman's cheek is hand-tinted pink. There are a few bends in the metal. Frame is period authentic. Ornately carved wood with gold paint. Two nails on back secure a small piece of string for wall-hanging. Back of photo is covered by a piece of board and fastened with three small pins. Glass is in-tact, there are some chips to the wooden frame.

1/4 plate tintype photo, frame measures approximately 4.8" L x 3.75" W
